We’ve covered how EVs are kinder to the planet and the pocket, but can they make our cities smarter and commutes shorter? Without a doubt. On top of reducing noise pollution and emissions, electric vehicles are increasingly being recommended as a way to reduce congestion and optimise traffic flow, as the smoother driving experience they deliver helps reduce the risk of accidents and the knock-on effect of traffic jams. EVs are also becoming a popular last-mile connectivity solution, allowing commuters to complete their journey from a transit hub to their destination (and avoid costly clean air zone charges in the process).
On top of being electric, the future is also looking increasingly sci-fi with the rise of autonomous vehicles (AVs). In addition to allowing passengers the opportunity to catch up on a few emails or ZZZs during their commute, electric AVs are also programmed to keep a consistently safe distance between vehicles. This can greatly help reduce the random stop-start waves of traffic that often results in congestion. There’s a host of business benefits too, as AVs are predicted to optimise transportation routes and supply chains resulting in more cost-effective deliveries.
A PUBLIC DISPLAY OF ELECTRIC AFFECTION
One sector where electric vehicles have really taken off is public transportation. Head to any busy UK city and you’ll soon find yourself serenaded by the unmistakable hum of electric scooters, bikes, buses and even the odd black cab if you’re passing through London.
